A settlement grew at the mouth of the Amstel after the All Saints' Flood of 1170 opened the river to the Zuiderzee. A dam was built there between about 1264 and 1275, and the town first appears in a 1275 toll grant from Count Floris V of Holland. By 1327 the name had become Aemsterdam.
