THE STORY
Krakatoa's young volcano in the Sunda Strait
Anak Krakatau, Indonesian for "child of Krakatoa", is an active volcanic island in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra. It grew from the caldera left by the 1883 eruption that destroyed the island of Krakatoa. It lies within Ujung Kulon National Park, and its youth makes it a subject of extensive study by volcanologists.

The volcano first broke the surface on 29 December 1927, but early islands were washed away; it rose permanently on 11 August 1930. It then grew by 7–9 m a year to 338 m. On 22 December 2018 its southwest flank collapsed, triggering a tsunami that killed 437 people, and the volcano lost over two-thirds of its volume, dropping to 110 m.
