THE STORY
Last capital of the Khmer Empire
Angkor Thom, meaning "Great City", was the last and most enduring capital of the Khmer Empire, founded in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII. It covers 9 km² and is believed to have sustained 80,000–150,000 people. Archaeologists read its walls and moat as the mountains and oceans around the Bayon's Mount Meru.

Angkor Thom overlapped Yasodharapura, a capital about three centuries older, and took in earlier temples such as the Baphuon. The last known temple, Mangalartha, was dedicated in 1295. After the Ayutthaya Kingdom sacked the city, the Khmers moved their capital to Phnom Penh, and in 1609 a western visitor described it as uninhabited.
