THE STORY
Roman temples of Jupiter and Bacchus
Baalbek is known for the ruins of its Roman temple complex, which includes the temples of Jupiter and Bacchus. UNESCO, inscribing it as a World Heritage Site in 1984, called it one of the finest examples of Imperial Roman architecture at its apogee. The town is also known for its Great Umayyad Mosque and the Baalbek International Festival.

Baalbek's history goes back at least 11,000 years. After Alexander the Great conquered it in 334 BCE it was renamed Heliopolis, and it flourished under Rome; the Temple of Jupiter was probably completed around AD 60. Later sacked by the Mongols and struck by earthquakes, the city declined in importance in the Ottoman and modern periods.
