THE STORY
A vast adobe fortress-city on the Silk Road
Arg-e Bam, in Bam in Iran's Kerman province, is the largest adobe building in the world: a whole fortress named for the citadel that dominates its ruins. Its walls are 6–7 m high and 1,815 m long. Part of the UNESCO site 'Bam and its Cultural Landscape', it rose to importance from the 7th to 11th centuries as a Silk Road crossroads.

The fortress can be traced back to at least the Achaemenid era (6th–4th centuries BC) and was expanded under the Parthians. From 1900 people moved to a new town, and after the garrison left in 1932 the old city was abandoned. On 26 December 2003 an earthquake almost completely destroyed the citadel, and President Khatami announced it would be rebuilt.
