THE STORY
US nuclear test site, now World Heritage
Bikini Atoll is a coral reef in the Marshall Islands, with 23 islands around a 594 km² central lagoon. The United States detonated 23 nuclear devices there between 1946 and 1958. UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site in 2010 as a symbol of the dawn of the nuclear age.

The US relocated Bikini's 167 inhabitants before testing began with Operation Crossroads in July 1946; their first new home, Rongerik, could not feed them. About 100 residents returned in 1972 but were evacuated again in 1978 after dangerous radiation levels were found. Lingering contamination still keeps the islanders from returning.
