Capital and largest city of Argentina
Buenos Aires is the capital and largest city of Argentina, on the southwest shore of the Río de la Plata. The city proper has 3.1 million people and its urban area 16.7 million. It is an autonomous district, part of neither Buenos Aires Province nor its capital, and a 1994 constitutional amendment granted it autonomy.

A Spanish expedition under Pedro de Mendoza founded a first settlement on 2 February 1536, but attacks by indigenous people forced its abandonment within a few years. Juan de Garay founded the permanent city on 11 June 1580. Federalized in 1880, it became a leading destination for immigrants from Europe, particularly Italy and Spain, until 1930.
