THE STORY
Spain's fortified port on the Caribbean
Cartagena de Indias is a major port on Colombia's Caribbean coast and the capital of Bolívar Department. Under Spanish rule it was an important port for exporting Bolivian silver to Spain and, by the 17th century, an important slave market. Its colonial walled city and fortress became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

Pedro de Heredia founded the city on 1 June 1533, on the site of the Calamarí village, which he had found abandoned. Walls built in stages between 1614 and 1796 were designed to protect it from pirate attacks. In 1741 a British armada of 50 warships under Admiral Edward Vernon laid siege, but after a failed attack on the fortress of San Felipe Barajas, Vernon lifted the siege.
