THE STORY
Denmark's capital on the Øresund
Copenhagen is the capital and most populous city of Denmark, with an urban population of 1.4 million, mainly on the island of Zealand. The Øresund strait separates it from Malmö in Sweden, and the Øresund Bridge links the two cities by road and rail. It is Denmark's cultural, economic and governmental centre.

Its founding is traditionally dated to 1167, when Bishop Absalon built a fortress on Slotsholmen, and its Danish name, København, means 'merchants' harbour'. It became Denmark's capital around 1416. It grew dramatically under Christian IV (1588–1648), the Citadel was completed in 1664, and a great fire in 1728 destroyed 28% of the city.
