THE STORY
Europe's best-preserved river delta
The Danube Delta, where the Danube empties into the Black Sea, is Europe's second-largest river delta after the Volga's and the best preserved on the continent. Most of its 4,152 km² lies in Romania, with a small part in Ukraine. Over 320 bird species are found there in summer, and it is a World Heritage Site.

The modern delta began forming after 4000 BC in a bay of the Black Sea, then advanced seaward in successive lobes, the youngest at the Chilia mouth since 1600 AD. Forest clearing upstream fed much of its growth, and geologist Liviu Giosan says probably 40% was built in the last 1,000 years. Dams built in the late 20th century have left it with a large sediment deficit.
