THE STORY
A sandstone massif in the Sahara
The Ennedi Plateau in northeast Chad is a sandstone bulwark in the middle of the Sahara, about 60,000 km² in area. Wind and temperature have eroded it into towers, pillars, bridges and arches. Its pools shelter a dwarf population of desert crocodiles, and it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2016.

Hunter-gatherers lived here around 5,000 to 4,000 BC, followed by cattle herders. Their rock art, dated from around 5000 BC onwards, shows mainly cattle, and later camels and horses. Today two mainly Muslim semi-nomadic groups use the plateau with herds of camels, donkeys, sheep and goats, and African Parks has co-managed it since 2018.
