The Portuguese built a small fort of palm trees and mud here in 1588. The Dutch captured it in 1640 and ringed the whole peninsula with coral and granite ramparts and 13 more bastions, finishing the sea wall in 1729. The British took over in 1796, and the fort withstood the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami that damaged part of the town of Galle.
