THE STORY
Libya's walled oasis town, the pearl of the desert
Ghadames is an oasis town in northwestern Libya near the borders with Algeria and Tunisia, and one of the oldest pre-Saharan cities. Its houses divide functions vertically: stores on the ground floor, family rooms above over covered alleys, and open-air rooftop terraces reserved for women. The walled old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

First recorded by the Romans as Cydamus, the oasis was invaded by Lucius Cornelius Balbus in the 1st century BC. Ruled by Muslim Arabs from the late 7th century, it was a base for trans-Saharan trade until the 19th century. New houses were built outside the old town in the 1970s, and the old town was largely emptied in the 1990s.
