THE STORY
British territory guarding the Mediterranean
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and city of around 38,000 people at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, covering just 6.8 km². Because it controlled the Strait of Gibraltar, the narrow entrance to the Mediterranean, it became an important Royal Navy base, notably in the Napoleonic Wars and World War II. Spain disputes British sovereignty over it.

The Almohads founded a permanent settlement with a castle in 1160, and the name comes from the Arabic Jabal Ṭāriq, Mount of Tariq. An Anglo-Dutch fleet captured the town in 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession, and the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht ceded it to Britain. Gibraltarians rejected Spanish sovereignty in 1967 and shared sovereignty in 2002.
