THE STORY
Yellowstone's largest hot spring
Grand Prismatic Spring, in Yellowstone's Midway Geyser Basin, is the park's largest hot spring and the third largest in the world. It is about 370 ft (110 m) across and 160 ft (50 m) deep, and discharges some 560 US gallons of 160 °F (70 °C) water a minute. Its colours come from mats of heat-loving bacteria and archaea around its edges.

In 1839 four American Fur Company trappers crossing the Midway Geyser Basin noted a "boiling lake", most likely this spring. The Washburn–Langford–Doane Expedition visited in 1870. Geologists of the 1871 Hayden Geological Survey recorded it and named it for its striking colours.
