The palace was completely burned down in 1592 during the Imjin War and was not restored until the reign of King Gojong in the late 19th century. After Japan colonized Korea in 1910, almost all of its around 500 structures were sold off or demolished, and only 40 remained by 1945. Restoration began in the 1980s, with plans running to 2045.
