King Hassan II announced in 1980 that he wanted a great mosque for Casablanca built on the water. Designed by the French architect Michel Pinseau and built by Bouygues, it took seven years from 1986 and was inaugurated on 30 August 1993. Much of the cost was met by public subscription, with twelve million people donating.
