THE STORY
Largest of the Galápagos Islands
Isabela covers 4,586 km² and is 100 km long, larger than all the other Galápagos Islands combined. It straddles the equator and has a little under 2,000 permanent residents. It is home to more wild tortoises than all the other islands, with several subspecies roaming the calderas of its volcanoes.

Isabela is about 1 million years old, formed by the merger of six shield volcanoes near the Galápagos hotspot, five of them still active. Its Spanish name, Santa Isabela, honoured Elizabeth of Portugal until 1892, when Ecuador renamed it Isabela for Queen Isabella I of Castile. The English knew it as Albemarle Island, a name given by Ambrose Cowley in 1684.
