THE STORY
The great temple of Amun at ancient Thebes
Karnak is a vast complex of temples, pylons and chapels near Luxor, and was the main place of worship of the Theban Triad, headed by the god Amun. Its Great Hypostyle Hall covers 5,000 m² with 134 massive columns. Part of ancient Thebes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, it is believed to be Egypt's second-most-visited historical site after Giza.

Construction began under Senusret I (reigned 1971–1926 BCE) and continued into the Ptolemaic era, with about thirty pharaohs adding to it. Most surviving buildings date from the New Kingdom, when Thebes became capital of a unified Egypt under the Eighteenth Dynasty. Hatshepsut raised twin obelisks at its entrance, and one still stands.
