THE STORY
Qatar's Inland Sea and largest reserve
Khor Al Adaid is an inlet of the Persian Gulf in southeast Qatar, on the Saudi border about 78 km south of Doha, known locally in English as the Inland Sea. Declared a nature reserve in 2007, it is Qatar's largest, at about 1,833 km², and supports ospreys, dugongs and turtles. It is on UNESCO's Tentative List for World Heritage.

In the 19th century, seceders from Abu Dhabi's Bani Yas tribe settled here several times, and the inlet became a refuge for pirates. Abu Dhabi forces, with a British warship, sacked the village in 1879, and it was abandoned in 1880. The inlet stayed at the heart of border disputes until Qatar and Saudi Arabia demarcated their border in 2021, giving Qatar all of it.
