THE STORY
Bolivia's red lagoon and flamingo nursery
Laguna Colorada, "Red Lagoon", is a shallow hypersaline lake at about 4,278 m in Bolivia's Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve. Red sediments and salt-loving algae, mainly Dunaliella salina, tint it pink to deep red. It is a primary breeding ground for Andean, Chilean and James's flamingos, which feed on its abundant plankton.

Laguna Colorada was designated a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in 1990. In 2009 the site, now called Los Lípez, was expanded from 513 km² to 14,277 km² to take in the surrounding high Andean salt and brackish lakes and the bofedal wetlands around them.
