THE STORY
The deepest lake in Central America
Lake Atitlán, in Guatemala's highlands, reaches a maximum depth of about 340 m, making it the deepest lake in Central America. It covers about 130 km² and has no outlet to the ocean. Its shores are home to Tz'utujil and Kaqchikel Maya communities, and it is one of Guatemala's most important tourist attractions.

The lake fills a caldera formed by the Los Chocoyos eruption about 79,500 years ago, which spread ash from Florida to Ecuador. In 1958 black bass were introduced for anglers, and they eliminated more than two-thirds of the native fish species. A 1976 earthquake fractured the lake bed, and the water level fell 2 m within a month.
