Bled Castle, on a precipice above the lake, is the oldest Slovenian castle according to written sources. It is first mentioned in a deed of 22 May 1011 by which Emperor Henry II gave it to the bishops of Brixen, whose residence it remained for eight centuries. The area passed to the Habsburgs in 1278, and the castle is now a museum of the lake's history.
