Count Siegfried acquired a small castle here in 963 and began a fortress on the Bock rock. From 1644 Spain dug 23 km of tunnels beneath it, and in 1794–95 it held out through a seven-month French siege, earning the name "Gibraltar of the North". The 1867 Treaty of London ordered its fortifications dismantled.
