THE STORY
The holiest city in Islam
Mecca, in the Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia, is considered the holiest city in Islam. Its Great Mosque, the Masjid al-Haram, holds the Kaaba, the direction of prayer for all Muslims. Every adult Muslim who is able must make the Hajj there at least once in a lifetime, and non-Muslims are not permitted to enter the city under Saudi law.

Muhammad was born in Mecca in 570, left for Medina in 622 after years of persecution, and later returned with 10,000 followers to take the city, which became the centre of the Hajj. After centuries of changing rulers, it was taken by Ibn Saud in 1925. Since then it has expanded hugely, with the Clock Towers rising over the mosque and many historic buildings demolished.
