Mount Ararat is a dormant compound volcano in easternmost Türkiye whose main summit, Greater Ararat, rises to 5,137 m, the country's highest peak. Since the Middle Ages it has been identified with the biblical resting place of Noah's Ark. Though outside Armenia's borders, it is Armenia's principal national symbol and appears on its coat of arms.

Friedrich Parrot, Khachatur Abovian and four others made the first recorded ascent in 1829. In July 1840 a phreatic eruption and a possibly linked magnitude 7.4 earthquake killed up to 10,000 people, and a landslide buried the village of Akhuri. The mountain came under Turkish control in 1920, confirmed by the 1921 treaties of Moscow and Kars.
