THE STORY
Ancient geoglyphs in Peru's desert
A group of huge geoglyphs in the Nazca Desert of southern Peru: straight lines, geometric shapes and more than 70 animal figures such as a hummingbird, condor and monkey. Some shapes are best seen from the air. Their purpose is debated, though most scholars ascribe religious significance to them. They became a World Heritage Site in 1994.

The lines were made during the Paracas and Nazca phases, about 500 BC to 500 AD, by removing reddish surface pebbles to expose lighter ground beneath. Pilots spotted them from the air and archaeologist Toribio Mejía Xesspe noticed them in 1927; Paul Kosok and Maria Reiche began serious study in the 1940s. Drones have revealed hundreds of new figures this century.
