Royal palace of Louis XIV, now a museum
The Palace of Versailles, southwest of Paris, was the principal residence of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI, where the king, court and government lived. Conceived by Louis XIV to glorify the monarchy, it is considered a masterpiece of French classical architecture and was widely influential across Europe. It now houses the National Museum of the History of France.

Louis XIII built a modest hunting lodge here in 1623. Louis XIV expanded it from the 1660s and moved the court and government in on 6 May 1682. In October 1789 a crowd from Paris forced the royal family to leave, and in the 1830s Louis Philippe I turned it into a history museum. The Treaty of Versailles was signed in its Hall of Mirrors in 1919.
