THE STORY
Home of the UK Parliament
The Palace of Westminster is the meeting place of the UK Parliament, home to the House of Commons and the House of Lords. "Westminster" has become shorthand for the British government, and the Westminster system is named after it. Its Elizabeth Tower houses the bell nicknamed Big Ben, and the palace has been part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

Built in the 11th century, it was the main residence of England's kings until a fire in 1512, and Parliament had met there since the 13th century. A larger fire in 1834 destroyed most of it but spared Westminster Hall. Charles Barry, helped by Augustus Pugin, designed the Gothic Revival replacement, which took 30 years to build from 1840.
