THE STORY
Caravan city of the Syrian Desert
Palmyra is an ancient city in an oasis of central Syria, 215 km northeast of Damascus. It grew rich on caravan trade, its merchants working along the Silk Road and across the Roman Empire, and built the Great Colonnade, the Temple of Bel and tower tombs in an art blending Mediterranean traditions. UNESCO listed the site in 1980.

Palmyra peaked in the 260s, when King Odaenathus defeated the Sasanian emperor Shapur I. His successor, queen regent Zenobia, rebelled against Rome, and in 273 Emperor Aurelian levelled the city. The Timurids reduced it to a village in 1400. In 2015 the Islamic State captured Palmyra and destroyed large parts of the ruins before the Syrian Army retook it in 2017.
