THE STORY
A Patagonian refuge for southern right whales
Península Valdés, in Argentina's Chubut Province, is an important nature reserve listed by UNESCO in 1999. The sheltered Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San José hold the world's most important breeding ground for southern right whales, which arrive between May and December. Sea lions, elephant seals and fur seals live along its coast.

Magellan's expedition charted its coasts in 1520, and ships later came to hunt sea lions for their skins. Basilio Villarino's expedition named it in 1778 after the Spanish minister who had ordered the voyage. In the 18th century the Spanish founded the small Guardia de San José settlement here; today the land is mostly sheep estancias around the town of Puerto Pirámides.
