THE STORY
Pisa's walled cathedral square, a World Heritage Site
Formally the Piazza del Duomo, it is a walled 8.87-hectare compound in central Pisa, recognised as an important centre of European medieval art. It holds four great religious buildings: the cathedral, the baptistery, the Leaning Tower (the cathedral's bell tower) and the Camposanto cemetery. UNESCO listed the whole square in 1987.

The cathedral was begun in 1064 to designs by Buscheto and set the model for the Pisan Romanesque style; the baptistery followed in 1153. Work on the bell tower began in 1173, and five years later weak subsoil made it sink on its south side. Its bell chamber was added only in 1372, and its lean, about 5.5 degrees before 1990, was reduced to about 4 degrees by 2010.
