Poás has erupted 40 times since 1828. A strong eruption in April 2017 forced evacuations and closed the national park for nearly 17 months, until September 2018. Renewed activity in 2025 closed it again, and in April 2025 it sent up a 4 km ash column, its tallest since 2017.
