THE STORY
Portugal's second city and home of port wine
Porto, on the Douro estuary, is Portugal's second-largest city, with about 1.9 million people in its metropolitan area. Port wine is named after it, as the fortified wine was packaged and exported from the cellars of neighbouring Vila Nova de Gaia. Its historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

Porto was an outpost of the Roman Republic by the 2nd century BC, and its old name, Portus Cale, has been suggested as the origin of the name Portugal. In 1415 Henry the Navigator launched the conquest of Ceuta from the city, opening Portugal's Age of Discovery. Holding out through an 18-month siege in 1832–1833 earned it the name Cidade Invicta, the Unvanquished City.
