THE STORY
Pharaohs' tombs and the last Ancient Wonder
The Giza pyramid complex, on the edge of the Western Desert about 13 km south-west of central Cairo, holds the Great Pyramid, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, and the Great Sphinx. The pyramids were built as tombs for pharaohs. The Great Pyramid is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one still standing.

All three pyramids and the Great Sphinx were built in Egypt's Fourth Dynasty, about 2600–2500 BC. Khufu's Great Pyramid, from around 2580–2560 BC, was then the tallest structure in the world. Workers' tombs found beside the pyramids in 1990, with bread and beer for the afterlife, support the view that the builders were paid labourers, not slaves.
