THE STORY
The Habsburgs' summer palace
Schönbrunn was the main summer residence of the Habsburg rulers. Its 1,441-room Baroque palace and gardens, with a zoo, an orangery and a palm house, were listed by UNESCO in 1996 as a remarkable Baroque ensemble. It is Vienna's most popular tourist sight, with almost 4 million visitors in 2017.

Emperor Maximilian II bought the site in 1569 as a hunting ground, and a palace was added in 1638–1643. The present palace was built in the 1740s and 1750s under Empress Maria Theresa. Emperor Franz Joseph was born and died there, and after the monarchy fell in 1918 the palace passed to the Austrian Republic and became a museum.
