THE STORY
Sea-level shortcut between Europe and Asia
The Suez Canal is a 193.3 km artificial sea-level waterway across Egypt's Isthmus of Suez, linking the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and dividing Africa from Asia. It cuts the voyage from the Arabian Sea to London by about 8,900 km. In 2021 more than 20,600 vessels passed through it, an average of 56 a day.

Ferdinand de Lesseps formed the Suez Canal Company in 1858, and digging began at Port Said in 1859, using forced labour until 1864. The canal opened on 17 November 1869. President Nasser nationalised it in July 1956, leading Britain, France and Israel to invade, and it was closed for eight years after the 1967 Six-Day War.
