Danish architect Jørn Utzon won an international design competition in 1957, and construction began in 1959. Years of struggle to engineer the shells, rising costs and clashes with a new state government led Utzon to resign in 1966, and a team led by Peter Hall finished the interiors. Queen Elizabeth II opened it in 1973, ten years late and far over budget.
