THE STORY
Trajan's colony in the Aurès Mountains
Timgad, ancient Thamugadi, was a Roman city in the Aurès Mountains, about 35 km east of Batna. Emperor Trajan founded it as a colonia around 100 CE, mainly as a bastion against the Berbers of the Aurès, and settled it largely with Roman veterans. Nicknamed the Pompeii of North Africa, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.

Timgad was a centre of the Donatist church in the 4th century. Sacked by the Vandals in the 5th century, it was destroyed by Berber tribes at that century's end, then retaken and rebuilt by the Byzantine general Solomon in 539. It was uninhabited by the 8th century; the French took control in 1881 and excavated it systematically until 1960.
