THE STORY
Patagonian national park around the Paine massif
Torres del Paine National Park protects mountains, glaciers, lakes and rivers in southern Chilean Patagonia, centred on the Cordillera del Paine. Established in 1959 and named a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978, it is one of Chile's largest and most visited parks, with about 252,000 visitors a year. Paine means "blue" in the Tehuelche language.

The Paine massif is made largely of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks intruded by a Miocene laccolith. Glacial erosion over the last tens of thousands of years sculpted it: on the Torres the overlying sediments have been stripped away entirely, leaving resistant granite, while the Cuernos keep dark caps of sedimentary rock above their pale granite bands.
