THE STORY
One of Chile's most active volcanoes
Villarrica, known in Mapuche as Rucapillán, is one of Chile's most active volcanoes, about 750 km south of Santiago. It is one of a small number worldwide known to have an active, if intermittent, lava lake in its crater. It is the westernmost of three large stratovolcanoes aligned along the Mocha-Villarrica Fault Zone, and lies within Villarrica National Park.

Villarrica emerged in the Middle Pleistocene; its ancestral cone collapsed about 100,000 years ago and again 13,700 years ago, leaving calderas. Eruptions have been recorded since the city of Villarrica was founded in 1552. In 1971 toxic gases killed at least 15 people in Villarrica and Pucón, and a 2015 eruption forced 3,385 people to evacuate.
